Saguday, Quirino - Ilagan City's secondary boys volleyball team went down the wire in their first assignment against Santiago City.
The Ilagueno spikers took the first set, 25 - 23 ending it with a convincing kill from their team captain Omar Riaz in front of a towering player from Santiago who stands 6 feet 3 inches.
In the second set, Ilagan took an early lead, 14-7 and looked poised to sweep the game but the gutsy Santiaguenos rallied using a combination of aces, kills and placings forcing a deciding set, 25-22.
Santiago sustained the momentum leading by 4 at 16-12 in the third set after the setter from Ilagan sprained his foot, followed by a bad play & series of errors. However, the netters from Ilagan levelled the set at 21-21 after the referree awarded a point in their favor, reverting an early call sending jeers from the crowd. Ilagan finished the third set at 25 - 21.
The Ilagan spikers will next face the host province at the Quirino Sports Complex tomorrow.
